VIRGINIA STATE UNIVERSITY (VSU) ALUMNI OF “REMEMBER THE TITANS” FAME AND FRIENDS ARE BACK FOR HOMECOMING 2004

VSU alumni Paul “Doc” Hines graduated in 1960 and went on to have a 39-year career as a physical education teacher and coach. He was immortalized in the Disney movie “Remember the Titans” starring Denzel Washington. As the offensive line coach, he helped lead the T.C. Williams Titans football team portrayed in the movie to an undefeated season.

Each year for the past 15 years, Hines and his former classmates make a large contribution to VSU’s homecoming in the form of the “Trojan Horse.” The Trojan Horse is an RV that provides a gathering place for alumnus to meet and greet. It has attracted upwards of 500 alumni in past years and proven to be one of the largest tailgate parties of the day.

Adventures at the Trojan Horse and the VSU Homecoming are featured in the book A Titan of a Man – A Coach of the Famous ’71 Titans Who Inspired Generations of Young People by Paula Hines Lonergan. Hines devoted his life to building character in his students and players and helping them to fully develop their skills and abilities. This book gives advice on how to succeed in parenting, coaching, teaching, and life.

Both Hines and the author of A Titan of a Man will be at the Trojan Horse during VSU Homecoming 2004. The author will also be at the VSU bookstore on October 9, 2004 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. All visitors will receive a free Titan souvenir at the Bookstore.
